Hổ phách là gì?

Theo thần thoại Hy Lạp, khi Phaethon, con trai của thần mặt trời Helios bị giết, những người chị của Phaethon vì quá đau buồn mà khóc cho tới chết. Họ hóa thành những cây dương, và nước mắt của họ rơi xuống biến thành hổ phách.

Hổ phách (Amber) thực chất chính là nhựa hóa thạch của các loài thực vật (Chủ yếu là thông). Loại hổ phách quý giá nhất là hổ phách sinh ra từ nhựa thông cổ đại hiện tại đã tuyệt chủng (Thường xuất hiện ở vùng Bantic, Dominica và một số nước khác như Lebanon, đảo Sicile, Mexico, Rumani, Canada…). Nhựa thông cổ đại có mùi rất thơm nên thường thu hút côn trùng đến, vô tình cuốn luôn các con côn trùng này vào bên trong, khiến chúng không thể thoát ra được. Do vậy bên trong khối hổ phách thường có lưu giữ xác của các loại côn trùng cổ đại. Hổ phách vùng Baltic cổ hơn, nhưng hổ phách Dominica lại nhiều xác côn trùng hơn do nhựa của những cây ở đây có mùi thơm nhiều hơn. Tuy nhiên loại hổ phách này hiện nay đã gần như không còn.

Có rất nhiều loại cây có thể sinh ra nhựa. Nhựa cây là chất hữu cơ rất dễ bị phá hủy trong tự nhiên. Do vậy để có thể tồn tại được đến ngày nay, nhựa cây đó phải có khả năng chống chịu sự phân hủy từ các quá trình vật lý và sinh học trong tự nhiên. Sự tiếp xúc trực tiếp với ánh sáng mặt trời, mưa, nhiệt độ khắc nghiệt đều có xu hướng làm tan rã nhựa cây. Quá trình này còn được hỗ trợ bởi những vi sinh vật như vi khuẩn và nấm. Nếu vượt qua được tất cả những điều đó thì  nhựa cây thông thường sẽ biến thành hổ phách quý giá.Do hổ phách cổ đại hiếm như vậy, để đáp ứng nhu cầu cao của thị trường, hiện tại con người đã sản xuất được hổ phách từ những cây thông đang sinh trưởng, giúp tạo ra các sản phẩm với sản lượng lớn, chất lượng đẹp, nhiều mẫu mã độc đáo với giá thành rẻ hơn trước rất nhiều.

Tác dụng của hổ phách

Về mặt sức khỏe, hổ phách đặc biệt tốt cho các bé đeo khi bé mọc răng. Một chiếc vòng hổ phách cho bé đeo sẽ giúp giảm đau, bé đỡ quấy khóc. Về mặt trang sức, hổ phách là loại đá trang sức được yêu thích bởi màu sắc long lanh rực rỡ. Ngay từ thời kỳ đồ đá, hổ phách đã được sử dụng như những món đồ trang trí. Hổ phách dùng làm trang sức thường có màu đỏ, cam, vàng rất bắt mắt. Trong lòng hổ phách thường có lẫn các loại lá, hoa, vỏ hạt … của các loài thực vật, tạo nên những hình thù lạ mắt. Nhưng đặc biệt hơn là những viên hổ phách cuốn trong lòng nó xác của các loài côn trùng, đó có thể coi như những bằng chứng sống về thế giới cổ đại. Loại này có giá trị cực cao không chỉ về mặt trang sức, mà còn là giá trị sưu tầm. Ít ai chơi đá mà lại không mong muốn được sở hữu một viên hổ phách thứ thiệt có chứa các côn trùng mắc kẹt trong đó.

Ngoài ra hổ phách cũng được sử dụng trong lĩnh vực thủ công mỹ nghệ, Đông Y. Hổ phách có vị ngọt, tính bình nên có tác dụng an thần, lợi tiểu, tán huyết …
